There is no doubt that the Yorkie is a glamor dog. Often times they travel in style, bundled up in a purse or bag with their top knot and silky coat. They always attract attention of men and women who swoon over their cuteness.
Sure, they are cute, but it’s their personality that has them being treated like princes and princesses. They only weigh as much as 7 pounds but act more like a dog that weighs 150 pounds. They are definitely a big dog trapped in a small dogs body.
They can be a little aggressive toward strangers and small animals. It’s important to make sure you raise your Yorkie around other animals and children. Bringing these elements into an already comfortable Yorkie can result in some problems with aggression and jealousy.
No rodents are safe with Yorkies, they were bread in the late 1800’s to be mice catching dogs in factories. This may also explain why they tend to be aggressive with other small animals and cats.
They do require a lot of attention and don’t like being left alone. They need exercise, but don’t necessarily need to get it by walking. A playing session in your home would be adequate, which makes them great for apartments.

♦ If you have a toddler or really small children it’s not recommended that you get a Yorkshire. They are small and delicate as well as display a protective and defensive personality.
♦ This doesn’t mean they can’t exist with children, they can. But they must be raised properly and your children must understand how to respect and treat them.
♦ Yorkies tend to be very picky eaters and can easily develop digestive problems.
♦ Sometimes their bad eating habits can occur because of problems they have developed with their teeth or gums. It’s a good idea to get your Yorkie to the vet if they show discomfort after eating.
♦ Yorkies have a hard time understanding how small they are. They really do have a big dog complex. It’s not just for show however. They will fight a bigger dog and they have a fight to death drive about them. It’s important to understand this and keep your Yorkie out of these kinds of situations.
♦ Be cautions of “Tea Cup” Yorkies. The smaller the Yorkie the more likely they are to develop a genetic disorder and are more prone to health issues. They are attractive because of their size, but are basically created when two runts are bread. Typically the runts of a Yorkie litter have more health problems.
♦ They should be around 8-9 inches at the should and will weigh no more than 7 pounds and typically no less than 4.
♦ The worst thing you can do is spoil your Yorkie. Their personality makes this VERY easy, but it’s important you don’t fall for their charm. They are very smart and much easier to train as puppies, it’s almost impossible to break a bad habit developed by a Yorkie.
♦ Expose them to things socially while they are young. This will help them be more well rounded and overall more friendly.
♦ The British Kennel Club first registered Yorkshire Terriers in 1874. The first Yorkie breed club was established in 1898 in England.
♦ The first recorded Yorkshire Terrier in the US was in 1872. It was 1878 that they started competing in dog shows. They were divided by weight in those early shows, they had an over 5 pound division and under 5 pounds. Now they are just one division that ranges from 3-7 pounds.
♦ They don’t eat a lot, but they should be fed 1/2 to 3/4 cups of high quality dry food a day. This should be divided into small meals. They like routine, so try to make it around the same time every day.
