Today I decided to do something a little different, we are going to be talking about tropical rainforest facts for kids. The tropical rainforests of the world are truly amazing and house some of the most diverse plant and animal life found anywhere. Today I am going to share with you some truly amazing facts about the tropical rainforest. This information is very important as these tropical rainforests are starting to disappear, and one way we can help is by simply creating awareness.

You can define a tropical rainforest as an ecosystem that occurs around 28 degrees north or south of the equator. It’s defined as a rainforest for fairly obvious reasons, they get a lot of rain. They also typically will have much higher than average temperatures. Rainforests are not only found
in one location, they are found around the world. You can find tropical rainforests in Central America, South America, Mexico, Asia, Africa, Australia.
In terms of biome classification a tropical rainforest is considered a lowland equatorial evergreen rainforest. I guess you could say that is the scientific name for a tropical rainforest.
We will talk a little more about this later, but tropical rainforests are among the most threatened ecosystems in the world because of heavy logging and agricultural clearance. It’s sad, but true. The rainforests are shrinking rapidly because of humans.

♦ It is believed among the scientific community that there could still be millions of insect and plant species in tropical rainforests that are waiting to be discovered.
♦ The word jungle is the slang term for tropical rainforests. Typically if someone says “in the jungle” it means in the rainforest.
♦ The largest rainforest that exists today is the Amazon rainforest.
♦ Today tropical rainforests cover about 6% of the worlds surface, this has been reduced from 14% since man starting destroying it.
♦ The Amazon rainforest has over 2000 species of butterflies alone.
♦ Many ingredients in medicines are found in the rainforests. It is believed that about 25% of our current ingredients were found there.
♦ The Amazon rainforest houses one fifth of the worlds fresh water supply.
♦ The rainforests are so thick and dense that only about 2% of sunlight is able to reach the forest floor.
♦ The soil in tropical rainforests is actual very poor with little to no nutrients.
♦ Every second a section the size of a football field is being cut down of the rainforests.
♦ Plants in the rainforest display incredible growing speeds, a giant bamboo can grow up to 9 inches in one day.
♦ In South American rainforests sloths move so slow that algae can actually grow in their fur.
♦ It can take rain 10 minutes to fall from the top of the trees to the forest floor because of how dense the rainforest can be.
♦ The Australian rainforests have an amazing display of plants life. As a matter of fact, 80% of the plant life found in these forests are not found anywhere else in the world.
♦ There are some pretty strange flying animals in the rainforests of Asia. You can find flying frogs, squirrels and snakes.
♦ Some of the monkeys found in the rainforests can be omnivores, they will eat both meat and plant life.
♦ There are more than 8000 plants species found in the Central Africa rainforests.
♦ Tropical Rainforests are responsible for up to 28% of the earths oxygen production.
♦ Even though rainforests make up a small percentage of earths coverage, they house 50% of earths plants and animals.
♦ There is a rainforest on every continent except for Antarctica.
♦ In just a small 4 square mile section of the rainforest you can find 150 species of butterflies, 750 species of trees, 400 species of birds and 1500 species of flowering plants.
♦ Many of the products we use every day are from the rainforests such as, coffee, cocoa and medicinal products including cancer fighting plants.
♦ The US Cancer institute identifies a group of plants that are helpful in fighting cancer, 70% of those were found in tropical rainforests.
♦ Even though 2000 plants have been identified as having anti-cancer properties, less than 1% of the species in the tropical rainforest have been analyzed for their medical properties.
