1. Snap Circuits

Snap circuits make all kinds of kits, but the original is still my favorite. The manufacturer recommends this is for 8 and up, but I have a 6 year old that loves his. So I have no doubt that a 7-8 year old girl or boy will have no problem figuring this out with a little help from the parents. They do have kits that are for older kids, but the Jr set will probably be the best way to start if they have not played with a kit before. Basically they assemble a circuit board that makes something happen at the end. It teaches them how electrical currents work, and makes it a lot of fun. It’s hands down one of the best toys I have ever purchased for my children, yours will love it too!

2. Tablets

This is a tough age to find a tablet and it really comes down to what experience your child has with handheld touch screen devices. If they have used them before and are familiar, you will probably want to go with an adult style tablet. If they have not, I would lean toward a child style tablet. Most kids this age will probably need a more adult style tablet. My 6 year old has an android tablet and has learned to use it just fine. Here are some that I suggest.

Ipad Mini

This is probably the best overall tablet on the list, but also the most expensive. If your child knows the iOS operating system, this will probably suit them best. If they play with your iphone, this is the one to get them. The learning curve will be much easier for them.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 4

If you are an Android user, then you should probably go with this tablet. This would be the tablet I recommend the most. You get a very powerful and functional tablet but for much less money than the iPad mini.

It is also a 7 inch tablet and has a bright HD screen. You can usually get one of these for under $200 which is a huge selling point for me. It has great parental controls so you know what your child can and can’t see. It has a camera and operates on the android OS, which I prefer over apples iOS.

Neu Tab

I have no personal experience with this tablet, but it does have some good reviews. The biggest selling point for this tablet is it’s price, you can get it for around $50 which is a great price for a 7 inch tablet. It’s not as powerful or as bright and vibrant as the other two, but how important is that to your 7-8 year old? Probably not much. It can play most of the games just fine without a hitch, according to most reviews.

3. Magna Tiles

If you have not heard of Magna Tiles yet, then your in for a treat. These geometrical shaped blocks are great for your kid to play with. The neat shape of the blocks make it possible to construct pretty much any design or shape. They are a LOT of fun to play with. My niece has a set, and I couldn’t believe how a “block” set kept my kids attention. I figured since it didn’t have a touch screen, he wouldn’t play with it. I was dead wrong, I had to pull him away from these. If you would have told me a gift card for a 7-8 year old boy or girl would make a good gift six months ago I would have called you crazy.
