Thomas Jefferson had a few different jobs before he became president of the United States. He was a politician that served as a member of Virginia’s legislature. He also became a lawyer and practiced law. He also had the task of running and maintaining a very large estate as a farmer and owner.

In the 1770’s the American colonies started to become unhappy with the rule of Britain. They felt that they were treated unjustly and unfairly. Virginia was one of the colonies that became upset with the way they were being ruled, it just so happened that this is where Thomas Jefferson resided. The Continental Congress was then formed, this was a meeting in Philadelphia where all the colonies met except Georgia. They discussed the treatment they had received from British rule and what they wanted to do about it. Thomas Jefferson was elected to represent his home colony of Virginia to propose the fight for their independence.

  • On April 13, 1743, Thomas  Jefferson was born in Virginia.
  • He had three brothers and six sisters. He had a wealthy family and was brought up on a farm.
  • Thomas Jefferson was the 3rd president and was 57 when inaugurated.
  • He worked diligently to keep the U.S. out of the French Napoleonic wars during his presidency.
  • President Jefferson was very intelligent and cultured. He could speak 5 different languages and was a very good writer.

  • Thomas Jefferson is considered the main author of the Declaration of Independence.  He wrote the original draft copy and only 25% of it was later changed and edited. This means he wrote 75% of the content in the Declaration of Independence.
  • John Adams and Thomas Jefferson were the only founding fathers that went on to become presidents of the United States.
  • In 1803 he was responsible for overseeing the Louisianna Territory purchase from France. This was significant because it doubled the land mass of the U.S. when it occurred.
  • He designed his own home in Charlottesville Virginia. It was a large mansion that was named Monticello.
  • Presidents before him would bow when meeting new guests. He introduced the custom of shaking hands.
  • Thomas Jefferson married Martha Wayles Skelton in 1772. They were only 11 years into their marriage when Martha passed away. They had 6 children together but only 2 made it to adulthood.

  • One of his greatest achievements was founding the University of Virginia. That’s saying a lot considering he authored most of the Declaration of Independence! This university was unique because of the many different subjects offered as well as the way the students could select them.
