Reindeer Facts For Kids
♦ They are the only species of deer that both the male and female have antlers.
♦ They are called reindeer everywhere but in North America, here we call them caribou. Although I like calling them reindeer much better!
♦ They have straight, hollow tubular hairs that make up their outer layer. These hairs help to insulate to keep them warm and buoyancy in water. They also have a warm wooly under coat. The coat is so well insulated, when a reindeer lays on top of snow, none of it melts. The coat does not allow any of their heat to leave their body.
♦ They can range in colors. You will see them from dark brownish all the way to a completely white coat. Typically the legs are darker. There is a dewlap (loose skin) that hangs from their neck. The dewlap helps protect their face when they are grazing in snow.
♦ Reindeer hooves are almost completely circular. They can spread to help when walking on softer ground and snow. They are tough and can be used to dig for food under hard ground and snow.
♦ Reindeer like to snack on fungi, herbs, lichens and sedges. Sounds yummy!
♦ They have specially designed noses that warm air before it reaches their lungs.
♦ The reindeer is considered an endangered species.
♦ Reindeer are designed for speed. They are very fast swimmers and can traverse swift rivers and long bodies of water. They can run up to 50 miles per hour!
♦ A reindeer fawn is typically about 10-11 pounds when born. They can actually walk and take off with their mother in just one day. These creatures are designed to migrate!

You can buy red or green sugar, but it’s much easier to just dye it with food coloring.
Mix up all those ingredients then store in a bag until Christmas Eve. Then simply spread it out on your lawn on Christmas Eve (don’t forget the poem). You can also just put it in a cup next to Santa’s cookies with a note reminding him it’s for his reindeer.
