The moon is a truly amazing and wondrous thing. I admire outer space, it’s scope and size completely boggles my mind. The moon is amazing because it really feels like it’s in our own back yard. The universe is such an expansive place, having the moon as our neighbor makes it feel like part of our home. We have been to the moon and sent things to the moon. I am disappointed that we have not made more attempts to get up to the moon, but the fact that we have been there is pretty cool. I remember as a kid staring up into the night sky with wonder and intrigue trying to wrap my mind around how far the moon is from Earth. I would later better understand the scope of our universe (as much as my puny brain let’s me) and all of a sudden the moon felt a little closer. Although the moon does not seem to support any life now or ever, it still seems like our distant cousin.
It’s really the only object besides the sun that we can see with our human eyes in the sky. I hope that some day we will be more advanced and be able to make more trips to the moon. How big is the moon?
The diameter of the moon (distance straight across) is 2,160 miles. To give you some scope, it’s about a 1/4 the size of earth. Earth is about 8,000 miles across. The moon weights about 81 quintillion tons.
What is the distance to the moon?
If you hopped in your space rocket and decided to take a stroll to the moon, you would want to make sure and have enough gas for 225,745 miles. Earth will house the last gas station on your trip, so make sure you have enough for 451,490 miles (distance there and back). Otherwise it will be a one way trip!
What is the temperature on the moon?
Might want to pack your sunscreen! During the day the sun get’s up to 243 degrees Fahrenheit. I would also suggest packing a warm blanket and good sleeping bag. At night time the moon reaches 261 degrees below zero Fahrenheit. Don’t plan on it being swimming or skiing temperature.
Is the moon made out of cheese?
I know this may come as a huge disappointment for you, but no…. The moon is not made out of cheese.
