Ever since I first heard about Megalodon, I have been fascinated with learning more about it. I’m bringing you some really amazing and interesting facts about Megalodon today. Megalodon is a giant prehistoric shark. The actual size of Megalodon is something that is debated in the scientific community. They have found partial skeletons and lot’s of teeth, but the problem is that sharks bodies are mostly made up of cartilage. It’s very rare to find any fossilized cartilage so they have to speculate just how big they think Megalodon was based on a few skeletal bones and teeth.

I have titled this article as “facts”, but it’s not 100% clear if the Megalodon Shark actually existed. Please take all these with a grain of salt. Most are considered theories, but does come from hard evidence. I will update this as we find more out about Megalodon!
♦ Megalodon if real would be the largest shark to ever live, that we have discovered. They could have reached 50-70 feet long!
♦ The Megalodon would have had large mouths with big teeth! It is thought to have had 5 rows of over 270 razor sharp teeth that could be as large as 7 inches long and up to 4 inches wide at the base. We have found Megalodon teeth as large as 7.6 inches long!
♦ We have actually found few teeth as large from any dinosaur. The teeth of a T-Rex are as big as 9 inches. Just giving you an idea of how big these teeth were!
♦ The T-Rex may have bigger teeth, but the Megalodon had a much larger jaw. When reconstructed it is predicted that the jaw of the megalodon would have been as large as 11 feet wide and almost 9 feet tall. Almost large enough to fit an entire school bus in it’s mouth.
♦ So it’s big! But what about power? It’s predicted that not only was it the largest, but also one of the most powerful. Scientists believ3e that it could have bitten with 24,000 to 41,000 pounds of force. That’s 10 times stronger than a great white!
♦ During it’s time in the ocean the Megalodon would have been at the top of the food chain. Nothing would have rivaled this large predator. They would have fed on every large mammal in the sea including almost every kind of whale.
♦ Although there is no way to prove 100% either way, most scientists believe that the megalodon is now extinct. There are, on occasion, reports of massive sharks. But nothing has been confirmed to be a megalodon.
♦ Many believe the megalodon became extinct because of the cooling of the worlds oceans. Megalodons did not like cooler waters, as they moved to warmer waters their food sources went to cooler waters. Eventually causing them to die from starvation.
♦ Their teeth are the key, for now. Most of what we know about Megalodon is from fossilized teeth we have found. They are found on islands all around the world, including as far south as New Zealand.

I hope that you learned a little bit today about the great megalodon shark. I know it’s a bit frustrating as most of what we know right now is theory based on teeth. But today’s scientists have become pretty good at figuring this stuff out. I would say most of what has been theorized is likely to be pretty accurate.
The real question is… Are they down there somewhere still? The oceans are so big and expansive, we will probably never know 100%. Until someone is able to produce some video evidence, we may never know!
