We decided to let out oldest daughter Cailyn tackle the actual gingerbread house, and let our 2 younger sons eight and two tackle the gingerbread train.
We purchased the train from our local grocery store, but will like purchase a different one next year from Amazon. We purchased the Wilton Gingerbread house from Amazon, and it turned out amazing!

How To Make A Gingerbread House – THE VIDEO!
If you would like to see the Wilton Gingerbread house and the Wilton Chocolate Gingerbread train in action, watch my kids and us making a mess below. It’s a great video and was a lot of fun to make and shoot. I really hope you enjoy it!!
Let me just say, the gingerbread house was very simple and a lot of fun, the train was much more of a hassle. The gingerbread house came completely assembled and was fairly no hassle, just get it out of the box and start decorating. Keep in mind that it comes with fondant and you will have to roll it out on powdered sugar and cut shapes with a knife. My daughter opted to use hers for the doors to her house.
The train however, was not so simple. It did come pre-baked, but not
pre-assembled. I read pre-baked on the package and for some reason associated that with being pre-assembled. I read a review that someone used a glue gun (since they didn’t want to eat it, just use it as decoration) to hold everything together. This idea did NOT go well for us. The hot glue would not stick to the gingerbread and it just created a huge mess. I decided to use the included thick frosting, and although it came apart a few times, it worked better than the hot glue. My advise would be to assemble the train the day before and let the kids decorate after it has sat overnight, that’s actually what the direction instruct as well.
Or, maybe we just should not be the people telling others how to make a gingerbread house/train, just kidding!
Once we finally were able to get the train assembled, it was actually a lot of fun to decorate. Both kits came with quite a bit of candy, definitely
enough to decorate the corresponding item. We put all the candy together and just kind of let them go crazy. The house did come with some Christmas light shaped candies that we kept aside for just my daughter to use. We used the fondant from the train to cut out some wheels for my son Connor. He was in charge of the engine of the train and my two year old Cam was in charge of the back of the train.
Looking at the photo’s, you can tell who in my family is a little more artistic than the others. I guess there is still some hope for the Cam, right?
This turned out to be a very fun family night of decorating and snacking. The kids had a blast and we will definitely be doing it again next year.
We enjoyed the no hassle of avoiding the baking and will likely continue to do it this way while Cam is younger. Maybe in a few years we will get adventurous and try baking out own!
The Wilton gingerbread houses were great quality and a lot of fun to make. Just be sure that you set do any assembling the day before to be sure that they are sturdy and ready to be decorated.
Have fun everyone!
