Interesting Facts About Bald Eagles
Bald Eagles are amazing creatures. They are also one of the most recognizable birds in the entire United States. They are so popular they are found on a quarter or a dollar bill! They are wildly known for their all white heads and tail and brown body. However, they don’t start off with these definable traits. Young eagles often leave that nest at an early age of 12 weeks. The young eagles have mostly dark heads, tail, and their brown wings and bodies have white in varying amounts. Bald eagle babies do not take on the recognizable traits till about 5 years old!
During breeding season, the male and female will work together to make a nest of sticks, which is usually located at the very top of a tall tree. Bald Eagle nests can weigh up to a ton and even measure up to 8 feet across! Once paired, bald eagles remain with each other until one mate dies. You can most likely see Bald Eagles around American wetland habitat like rivers, lakes, coasts, marshes or other large bodies of open water with an abundance of fish and not much human activity.
When flying, the bald eagle rarely flaps its wings, but soars across the sky instead, while holding its wings almost completely flat. The Bald Eagle can reaches speeds of 35–43 mph and around 30 mph while carrying fish or food. Bald Eagles have a dive speed that is between 75-99 mph (faster then cars drive on the freeway!) although it is very seldom to see them dive vertically.
