If you have seen the Disney Pixar movie Finding Nemo then you have seen or probably know a little about the clown fish. They are bright orange with a

Clown fish can reach sizes of 4.3 inches (11 centimeters) in length. The name anemonefish derives from their homes. They live in multicolored sea anemones. This do pack a little sting, which help protect the clown fish. They have a mucus layer that makes them immune to the sting of the anemone. It’s a partnership because the anemone’s themselves actually prey on animals as well. They will snack on the leftovers left behind by the clown fish.

The clown fish actually does a little dance to get themselves acclimated to the sea anemone. They touch different parts of their body to the anemone to get used to and more tolerant to the sting.

You can find a clown fish swimming around the shallow waters of the western Pacific Ocean, Red Sea and Indian Ocean. You can find them hanging out at the Great Barrier Reef as well. ♦ All clown fish are born as males. They have the ability to switch themselves to a female when the time is right. This change is permanent.

♦ Clown fish may use a sea anemone as a home but it’s actually more than that. Their relationship is called a symbiotic mutualism.  The clown fish can eat it’s dead tentacles and the anemone can eat parts of other fish that the clown fish does not finish. The anemone also protects the clown fish once it’s inside by stinging other fish with stingers the clown fish is immune to.

♦ Of the thousands of eggs that the clown fish lay, it’s not uncommon for almost all of them to live.

♦ Clown fish are actually poor swimmers when compared to peers. A fish who is a poor swimmer, huh.

♦ There are 1000 different species of anemones, only 10 of those are capable of hosting a clown fish.

♦ There are actually over 28 different species of clown fish.

♦ Despite what many people may think and their name, clown fish are actually not very funny. (Sorry had to throw that in, if you have seen finding Nemo you know what I’m talking about.)

♦ The percula clown fish is the species of clown fish that does a dance with the sea anemone.

♦ The amount of clown fish that were sold for aquariums tripled after the release of Finding Nemo.
