Fun Facts About Cheetah’s For Kids
Here are some really fun and amazing cheetah facts for kids.
♦ One of the easiest ways to identify a cheetah is by their spots. There is another way to recognize a cheetah instantly however. They have long black lines that go from their eyes down to their mouth. Scientist believe these are used to help the cheetah see long distances and protects them from the harsh sun, they refer to them as “tear lines”.
♦ Although Cheetah’s are incredibly fast and powerful, it’s only a couple of minutes before they begin to tire and are unable to continue their pursuit.
♦ They would certainly look large to us, especially considering we are used to seeing house cats. Of the big cat family cheetah’s are actually relatively small.
♦ Cheetah’s are pretty quite animals. They do not have the ability to roar like their other large cat counterparts. They do purr however, this usually occurs when grooming and around other cheetahs.
♦ Most of the other big cats do their hunting at night, cheetahs actually do their hunting during the day.
♦ The eye site on a cheetah is better than most large cats in daylight. They can spot prey up to 5 km away!
♦ Cheetahs do not see good during the night time and have trouble climbing trees.
♦ Cheetahs are not well equipped to handle themselves in a fight with other large animals. They have light bodies and dull claws. If an animal approaches that is either more aggressive or bigger, they will leave their prey behind to avoid any kind of fight.
♦ A cheetah can live on getting a drink every three to four days.
♦ The female cheetah will have 3 cubs at a time. The cubs that survive will start following their mother around at 6 weeks. They will actually remain with their mother for 1- 1.5 years.
♦ They are incredibly agile and very fun to watch. They have been nick named the trapeze artists of the jungle!

How Do Cheetahs Run So Fast?
Cheetah’s have many amazing special adaptions the assist them in reaching such high speeds. They have massive 
lungs and wide nostrils when you combine this with a strong heart and arteries they can provide more oxygen to their muscles. They have large leg muscles for how big they are, these muscles consist of fast twitch fibers that contract quicker then normal muscles. They are incredibly aerodynamic and light weight. Their hip and shoulder joints are loose and have very long legs. They also have a very flexible spine and can cover 7 m (20-25 feet) in one stride. WOW! These creatures are basically built for speed and power. Their anatomy is truly amazing.

There are around 7500 cheetahs that live in the wild today. Of these around 200 live in tiny isolated areas of Iran. Conflicts with farmers and loss of their small habitats are threatening these majestic animals. With harsh living environments and low genetic diversity the IUCN RED LIST considers them pretty vulnerable to extinction.
